Losing Dennis: A Family’s Struggle with the Impact of Dementia by Dan Giannopoulos

These images are very very powerful and emotive, a beautiful yet distressing photo story. However, these images show the much darker and heart breaking side of dementia. The choice of using black and white images instantly brings a more sinister twist to the mood of the story however the photos focus on the harsh reality of dementia rather than the positives or encouraging moments. I am definitely keeping my images in colour, I don’t want to draw attention to the misery that can come with dementia. Even the family portraits look solemn and dispiriting due to their lack of colour and vibrancy, a bleak addition to the memories Dennis is losing. They are elegant photos and well shot, just too sad for my photo story. I am determined to portray Sunrise in a positive light and show the happier side of old age and mental illnesses, living in the moment and enjoying the time you have left rather than dwelling on things you are losing or things you will miss. Whilst Giannopoulos has created a beautiful and inspiring body of work, it is not the direction I want to head in.
